Astra Lem, directora creativa, ilustradora y diseñadora radicada en la Ciudad de México, se asume como una mujer trans y una “transmutante”: una artista que entiende la transición no sólo como experiencia de género sino como principio vital y estético, una mutación constante que atraviesa el cuerpo, el arte y el tiempo mismo. Su transición y su drag —iniciados casi simultáneamente hace año y medio, en plena pandemia— fueron procesos complejos y solitarios, marcados por miedos, violencias estructurales y vértigo, pero también profundamente sanadores; encontrar referentes como Veneno le dieron el impulso definitivo para nombrarse y dar el salto. En el drag halló una vía para rasgar las imposiciones de una masculinidad que nunca le perteneció y explorar las infinitas potencias de lo femenino, mientras que en la creación colectiva convirtió su euforia en acción política al fundar el JunTrans Fest, un festival artístico y de incidencia nacido como catarsis y transformado en plataforma de furia, memoria y celebración trans. Aunque a veces la desvela la inseguridad y la sensación de no tener brújula, hoy se sabe sostenida por su comunidad y atravesada por una satisfacción profunda; imagina el futuro como no binario, transfurioso y colectivo, convencida de que la mayor venganza no sólo será ser feliz, sino celebrarse, acuerparse y vivir plenamente libre.
Astra Lem, creative director, illustrator, and designer based in Mexico City, embraces herself as a trans woman and a “transmutant”: an artist who understands transition not only as a gendered experience but as a vital and aesthetic principle—a constant mutation that moves through the body, art, and time itself. Her transition and her drag—both initiated almost simultaneously a year and a half ago during the pandemic—were complex and often solitary processes, marked by fear, structural violence, and vertigo, yet profoundly healing; encountering references like Veneno gave her the final push to name herself and take the leap. Through drag, she found a way to tear through the constraints of an imposed masculinity that never truly belonged to her and to explore the boundless possibilities of femininity, while her collective drive transformed personal euphoria into political action with the creation of JunTrans Fest, an artistic and activist platform born as catharsis and grown into a space of trans fury, memory, and celebration. Though insecurity and the feeling of lacking a compass sometimes keep her awake at night, she now feels held by her community and grounded in a deep sense of fulfillment; she envisions the future as nonbinary, trans-furious, and collective, convinced that the greatest revenge will not only be happiness, but celebrating one another, holding each other up, and living fully and freely.
